Overview
The code of silence acts as a cancer which when untreated, prompts misconduct to intensify and spread among employees. It allows corruption to destroy the workgroup in which it originated and then spread to other areas, causing more destruction. Research indicates it is a natural phenomenon caused by peer pressure, emotional bonding and the fear of being ostracized. It exists in most organizations.
Research has also revealed effective countermeasures for administrators. The key is to mold an organizational culture where loyalty to principles such as honesty and integrity are truly a higher priority than loyalty to another employee. Maintaining such an environment can prompt workers to stop or expose serious misbehavior rather than join the offender, ignore the transgression or help conceal it. The most powerful countermeasure will always be employees stopping fellow workers from committing misconduct.

Instructor Bio
Neal Trautman is the director of the Congressional-Award winning, non-profit, National Institute of Ethics. He also teaches anti-corruption seminars to foreign government officials for United States Department of State. Neal finished his 16-year government career as the Director of Human Resources for the city of Winter Park, Florida. He has authored 12 published books, instructed over 500 ethics/leadership seminars, presented 59 conferences speeches, written 56 articles and conducted 4 nationwide research studies. Neal was also the founding President of the International Association of Ethics Trainers. |
